About

A software architect who still writes the code.

30 years building enterprise software, 18 of them as the Technology Architect at Old Republic Home Protection. These days I build and run AI systems in production, review code other teams built with AI coding tools, and lead engineering as a fractional CTO. Based in Concord, in the SF East Bay.

What I've done

I've been building enterprise software for 30 years. For 18 of them I was the Technology Architect at Old Republic Home Protection, one of the country's largest home warranty companies. Over that time I stewarded a 20-year-old legacy enterprise platform, designed and built its modern replacement (Angular, Spring Boot microservices, SQL Server), and then designed a second greenfield cloud-first system on Azure. That full arc - legacy stewardship, modernization planning, greenfield rebuild - is something most architects never live through even once.

I still write code every day, and I run AI in production, not just in a slide deck. I operate ten live software products, a 59-tool MCP server spanning 12 functional domains, a retrieval-augmented chatbot, and a fleet of autonomous agents that runs my own business operations. That's what keeps my judgment current: when I tell you an AI project is harder than it looks, or that a vendor's cost estimate is optimistic, it's because I've done the work recently myself.

I also spent 18 years explaining technical decisions to non-technical executives and department heads. Getting the business and the technical team to the same understanding is half the job. I can be in a room with your engineers in the morning and your board in the afternoon and give both groups what they need.

How I work

You work with me

Every engagement is hands-on. There's no handoff to a junior; the person you talk to is the person reading your code and writing the report.

Fixed scope first

Most clients start with something bounded: an AI App Review, an assessment, or due diligence. Ongoing work comes after you've seen how I think.

Plain answers

I explain tradeoffs in language you can act on, and I'll tell you when AI is the wrong tool or a project is bigger than it looks.

Speaking

I speak on legacy modernization, technical due diligence, engineering leadership, and the practical realities of AI in software development, for executive audiences, CTO peer groups, and investor and portfolio company events. Talks run 30 to 60 minutes plus Q&A, in person or remote.

The business side

Client work is contracted and invoiced through Klass Concepts LLC, my company. Klass Concepts also runs klassconcepts.com, where I help small businesses in the East Bay with the tech that eats their week. I also build and sell Klass Personal OS, a Mac app that connects Claude or Codex to your real email, calendar, and files and runs jobs on a schedule.
